D-day. Normandy, France. June 6th, 1944.
What does this have to do with our New Testament Challenge? My husband's father flew 2 D-day missions - and survived.
World War 2 was a "religious" war because according to Hitler, "the Jews" had to be exterminated.
Waddy and I have been to the Holy Land 3 times. We have been fortunate enough to experience the "Journeys of Paul" through Greece and Turkey twice. Those experiences were thankful and mostly happy experiences. However, this trip to Normandy was somewhat spiritually crushing.
How could proclaiming "Christians" do something so destructive? I have a German background. What happened to drive people to such a frenzy?
During our trip we experienced the fall of the Roman empire, the power of a corrupt church leadership, the beauty of church architecture and art, the medieval wars - and thankfully - extremely good food.
Chapters 7 and 8 of John are difficult. Jesus is rejected. Chapter 7, verse 12 - "complaining" among the crowds.
This is making me sad. I think it's time to sign out for today.
(This is Bill) He was rejected, but His message lived on in the end. And in WWII, good triumphed over evil in the end, thanks to the brave men like your father in law. Wish we had men leading today who could lead like that! Jesus didn't react to the negative public opinion, like some people leading today.
ReplyDeleteThese verses are humbling to me. Esp 7:24, "Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment." Hitler did not follow this.
ReplyDelete"The Greatest Generation" did things without thinking of themselves, they truly did what they felt was for the greater good. It is sad but most people aren't like that any more. Society as a whole doesn't embrace selflessness, it seems it's all about self. I like going to the airshow at Ellington field and looking at the old warbirds and meeting WW2 vets, they are great to talk to. I wish there were more people like them.
ReplyDeleteselfishness??? What a drag! The root of whats in it for me syndrome. Yet if I tried everyday in every way possible to do whats next & live as Jesus would have me too... Just maybe I could truly be transformed to have a "servants heart" and serve my Lord & Savior by fulfilling his greatest commandment... Love each other.
